Welcome to our Game Changers.
The world moves forward because of game changers, those who see possibilities where others see limits. Across every industry, innovative organizations are transforming the way we live.
The Woman Who Saw a Better Way
Meet Tabitha Babbitt, the 19th-century weaver who watched a couple of guys saw wood the hard way and said, “There’s a better way to do that.”
Before power tools, production lines, and precision cutting, there was Tabitha Babbitt, a weaver in a quiet Shaker village who saw inefficiency and decided to slice straight through it. Her invention? The circular saw.
Born in 1779 in Harvard, Massachusetts, Babbitt was part of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, better known as the Shakers. The community prized simplicity, humility, and shared progress. They weren’t known for chasing fame. But innovation? That was baked into their daily life.
Tabitha’s lightbulb moment came in a sawmill. She noticed men cutting wood with a whipsaw, laboring back and forth, but only making progress on the push stroke. Wasted motion. Wasted energy. Babbitt knew there had to be a better way.
So she created one.
In 1813, she rigged a circular blade to a spinning wheel and invented a saw that cut continuously. No backstroke required. Just smooth, efficient power, years before industrial machinery took off. Her design would go on to revolutionize woodworking and manufacturing around the world.
But true to Shaker principles, she never patented it.
And that wasn’t her only contribution. Babbitt also improved textile tools, developed methods for making false teeth, and helped refine the production of cut nails. She didn’t invent for profit, she invented for progress.
Tabitha’s genius wasn’t about showmanship. It was about function. She spotted problems most people accepted as normal and solved them. No ego, just the kind of brilliance that quietly changes everything.
So the next time you fire up a circular saw and zip through a piece of plywood, thank Tabitha Babbitt. Because long before product roadmaps and engineering sprints, she spotted the problem and cut straight to the solution.
