Background
Texas A&M Innovation manages the intellectual property of the 11 universities and 8 state agencies that comprise the Texas A&M University System.
Wellspring and Texas A&M started working together in 2012 when Texas A&M first implemented Sophia. Before working with Wellspring, the university used an outdated database solution that didn’t meet their needs.
Opportunity
The Texas A&M innovation offices have evolved and grown since adopting Sophia in 2012. The organization has gone from each commercialization office managing its own portion of the IP portfolio to moving to a centralized office in March 2023 now called Texas A&M Innovation. Sophia played a key role in this transition and provides the ability to track each group, maintain historical data, and manage reporting to support the university’s ongoing success.
Approach
Rise of the CIO
Texas A&M hired the first Chief Innovation Officer for The Texas A&M University System who is focused on building an entrepreneurial culture with internal and external partnerships that are more strategic to execute longer-term goals. The CIO has aligned their teams, philosophies, and goals, enabling a new fresh program.
Wellspring Tech
Sophia continues to be the main tool for Texas A&M’s success. It houses all the IP and agreement records for hundreds of inventions and agreements. They also use Flintbox for their technology marketing and are working on implementing the new Ventures module to help manage their start-up portfolio.
Wellspring Services
Additionally, the Wellspring Office as a Service team evaluated and reviewed every detail of Texas A&M’s process and provided a thorough Standard Operating Procedure document. Thanks to Wellspring’s industry expertise, they revamped the innovation process to improve overall efficiency and support.
Training
The Wellspring team also provided staff training. The training program included ongoing hands-on training and personalized training based on the user’s role in the organization.
